Before Darfur: Black History Month Closing Event
Join us at Republic London for the closing event of our Black History Month programme and the launch of Before Darfur, a photography exhibition by Green Kordofan featuring Jil Orpen’s historic images of Sudan. Taking place from 5pm–7pm in the Common Room, the event brings together photography, conversation, community, and fundraising.
Before Darfur
Before Darfur presents photographs taken by Jil Orpen in Sudan between 1975 and 1980. The collection offers a glimpse into Sudanese life and communities before the Darfur conflict. As part of the launch, Jil Orpen will be in conversation, sharing stories and reflections connected to the photographs and her time in Sudan.
Prints from the collection will also be available to buy on the night through Green Kordofan’s own channels. Proceeds will support the charity’s ongoing work.
Letters to Sudan
The event also runs alongside Letters to Sudan, a participatory session led by Raga Gibreel.
Students, residents, and local families are invited to take part and respond creatively to ideas around Sudan, memory, community, and connection. The session creates space for people to share their thoughts and engage with the wider themes of the evening.
Supporting Green Kordofan
Green Kordofan is a UK charity running sport and youth development programmes for children who fled Sudan’s civil war and now live in Yida refugee camp, South Sudan.
The charity uses sport and youth development to create opportunities for children and young people affected by displacement. Through the launch of Before Darfur, the event also provides an opportunity to learn more about Green Kordofan and support its work.
The Before Darfur Black History Month Closing Event is free to attend.
Come along to Republic London for an evening of photography, conversation, creative participation, and community as we close our Black History Month programme.
