Join us on Tuesday 6 October for Black History Month at Republic as we open our month-long programme with an evening of creativity, reflection and live performance.
Taking place in the Common Room from 5–7pm, this free event brings together guided painting, an artist introduction and a short theatrical performance. Together, these activities create a relaxed space to connect, get creative and celebrate Black history, heritage and creative expression.
Mindful Paint & Sip with Love Hannington
To begin the evening, artist Love Hannington will lead a free guided painting session. Love’s practice draws on her Afro-Caribbean and Celtic heritage, while her work explores identity, culture and personal experience. During the session, she will invite you to slow down, experiment with painting and enjoy a mindful creative experience.
An Introduction from Julie Elizabeth
Next, curator Julie Elizabeth will give an introductory talk. She will provide context for the evening and introduce the wider Black History Month programme at Republic. Meanwhile, our Black History Month exhibition will bring together work by Jacqui Cooke, Lela Harris and Omalola Mau. The exhibition explores themes of identity, heritage and representation through the work of three artists.
Live Performance: Masks and Unmasking
In addition, the evening will feature a free short performance of a monologue from Masks and Unmasking, written by Charlotte Jennings and produced by Quassu Theatre Company. The performance adds a theatrical perspective to an evening centred around storytelling, identity and creative expression. We will confirm the performer soon.
Black History Month at Republic
