Create & Connect – Sustainable Stitching

Reclaimed textiles and collective stitching with Oitij-jo

As part of Republic’s Campus Sustainability Month, this participatory workshop explores sustainability, repair, and collective responsibility through textile making.

Curated and facilitated by Oitij-jo, the session invites participants to stitch, embroider, and assemble patchwork using reclaimed and scrap fabrics. Grounded in principles of reuse, repair, and slow making, the workshop offers a practical and reflective response to textile waste, overproduction, and material consumption.

Textile practices such as stitching and mending have long supported everyday sustainability – extending the life of materials, valuing care and skill, and encouraging mindful engagement with resources. This workshop approaches making as both a hands-on activity and a way of thinking, enabling participants to contribute to a shared textile that reflects collective action and environmental awareness.

Republic context

This workshop forms part of Republic’s commitment to environmental sustainability, cultural activity, and inclusive civic space. As a multi-university education campus, Republic supports creative programmes that encourage practical engagement with sustainability and shared responsibility. By hosting workshops focused on reuse, collaboration, and care, Republic provides space for learning that connects environmental awareness with everyday action.

No prior sewing or embroidery experience is required. All materials will be provided, with a focus on reclaimed and reused textiles. Participants are welcome to engage quietly or conversationally, according to their comfort.
