Why We Celebrate Black History Month:

Black History Month is a powerful reminder to honor the achievements and contributions of Black people in both the US and UK:

  • In the US: Black History Month started in 1926, initiated by historian Carter G. Woodson. It highlights the struggles and accomplishments of Black Americans and expanded to a month-long celebration in 1976.
  • In the UK: Black History Month began in 1987, showcasing the cultural heritage and impact of the African and Caribbean diaspora on British history. It is a time to celebrate Black excellence and challenge racial injustice.

Nadina Ali, a multi-disciplinary artist from Marseille based in London, will lead the workshop. Nadina’s art focuses on social justice and representation, using bold, colourful typography to make these topics accessible to a wider audience. She works across digital, print, and paint and has created artworks for posters, billboards, installations, and murals. Nadina is passionate about making art and creativity accessible to everyone, particularly those who don’t traditionally have easy access to it.

During the workshop, Nadina will guide participants in expressing their thoughts and reflections through art. She will offer informal, personalized support, helping attendees connect their ideas and experiences with their artwork. Through one-on-one conversations, she’ll encourage participants to reflect on the significance of Black History Month in the UK while translating their visions into powerful visual representations.
