Oluwayomi Adelekan, BA International Business, at UWS

28 Jun 2024

Meet Oluwayomi Adelekan, he’s studying a BA in International Business at the University of the West of Scotland. Oluwayomi, chatted to us about life on campus and how he’s got stuck in with the events and opportunities Republic Education Campus can offer students.

Why did you choose to study at UWS’s Republic Campus?

My research revealed that UWS is among the biggest modern universities, ranking among the top 600 globally. Moreover, my course is offered at the Republic London campus, which allowed me to study while staying with family.

Alongside my studies I’m looking to develop my business idea; to launch a sustainable clothing brand. Working from this campus allowed me to apply to The Greenhouse coworking space and their entrepreneurial programme, I studied there for three months.

What do you enjoy about studying at this campus?

I enjoy the various opportunities this campus presents as it is situated in London compared to other cities.

How do you find getting here?

At first I was taking the bus which was long, but now it’s a quick tube from south London. I stumbled upon the Denmark Hill train station to Shadwell, now it’s a quick connecting train to East India station where I get off fright next to campus.

What does your typical day on campus involve?

My typical day at the uni entails tutoring, taking notes, and engaging in activities with my colleagues. I fuel my energy with food and drinks whether from Sandwich Plus, or one of my favorite places Simply Fresh. Afterward, I do some self-study in The Common Room, and check out the latest information and events on campus. Sometimes I find myself using the faith room during the break.

Any campus, or local, tips for new students?

One major tip for new students is that they should engage in social activities outside their studies. Also, exploring amenities around the campus is vital. For example, I visited Sandwich Plus and had my first English breakfast there. I have also kept an eye out for free events such as the choir practice with the Poplar Singers, and yoga sessions at Myoset , they’re a great way to explore the campus and meet people.
