Marathon des Sables is a 250km desert ultra marathon through the Namib desert.
It is essentially a foot race open to runners and walkers with several stages, free style, with food self-sufficiency, over a distance of about 250km, in temperatures of 50+ degrees centigrade.
Each participant carries his/her own backpack containing food, sleeping gear and other material.
David Cregan is part of a growing movement of people who look at fitness as a holistic experience, focusing on health over aesthetics or competition. He is not a professional athlete, he’s 47 and works in Republic, just like you.
Two years ago he was recovering from major back surgery due to a herniated disc. He spent a year waiting for the operation, during which time he was unable to do any form of exercise; he was unfit, over weight and generally unhappy. NOt wanting his life to be over, as soon as he was recovered he began recapturing his fitness and set himself the ultimate challenge – completing the Marathon Des Sables!
Come along to hear David talk about his experience and maybe get inspired to join our onsite walking and running clubs that are starting this August, here at Republic!
