Republic Wellness
During this funny time, the Republic Community and Wellness team is still here to support you. We've crowd-sourced some best practice guidance for working from home from different organisations.
Take a read through and explore the below tips yourself, to see how you could improve your well-being.
Let us know what you’re doing and how it’s going by tagging @republic.ldn or #RepublicAtHome on Instagram.
Routine
Humans are born to adapt, so create yourself a new daily routine and stick to it. Make sure you get up at the same time each day, take a shower and put some fresh clothes on. As tempting as it is to work in pyjamas, this will really help you set into a different mode for the day.
Movement
Without our commutes, it’s even harder to get in our recommended 10,000 steps a day and get blood flowing. Aim to move and stretch as much as every 20 minutes. Set an alarm if you have to! You can also start any video calls you may be doing with a group ‘shake off’!
Exercise
Most of us already know that increasing our heart rate with some form of daily exercise is important, but perhaps more so now than ever, we can benefit from generating these natural happy hormones – endorphins! Make the most of your trip outside, whilst we have it and check Liz’s Videos on Facebook for ideas.
Work space
Find a spot in your home or bedroom that you can set up as a regular work space. That way, you can go ‘to’ work in the morning, and ‘leave’ at the end of the day, creating separation for your work/relaxation time.
Eye Strain
We can get eye strain very easily, particularly by focusing on a close screen for long periods. Sit by a window and make sure you get some “long distance” vision in your day by taking a good long view at the sky, several times a day.
Lunch
Make sure you take it, even if you didn’t do so in the office – eating away from your desk, mindfully, will provide a great mental break and help you avoid over-indulging through boredom. This is also a great time to take your daily exercise and get some sunlight which will do wonders for your circadian rhythms and sleep.
News
Limit your news consumption! It’s going to keep coming and it’s like to get worse. Keep up to date but be wary of getting into a news rabbit hole. Reading negative news triggers stress hormones which in turn lower your immune system – no one needs that right now!
Relaxation
This doesn’t have to take up much time and can have a profound effect on our well being. Try listening to this Chilled Cow playlist, using an app to meditate, or do something that doesn’t require a screen, but uses your hands and different parts of your brain, like painting, knitting or baking.
Hobbies & Learning
Take this opportunity to spend more time doing something you love, or try something you’ve always wanted to. Perhaps you’ve been wondering about the hype of meditation or Yoga is? Why not try our virtual classes this week. See details in the newsletter.
Relationships
Use this time and perhaps your daily walk outside to connect with friends and family in a positive way. Aim to make each other laugh and smile, focusing conversation on only the things within our control.
Nature
However you can get some nature into your day safely, do it. Buy yourself some flowers and have them close to your work space to notice the simply pleasure of nature blooming each day!
Play!
Laugh, cry, jump, dance, be silly, make funny videos for friends. Be creative and let loose. NO ONE is watching or judging.
